ABOUT MANCHESTER - A BRIEF HISTORY
A Brief History

In 1673, an enterprising young man named John Gilbert built a sawmill on the banks of the Hop Brook river.  The site, which had been settled by English colonists only a year before, proved an ideal location for business  The river provided power.  The land provided sustenance.  The town fathers provided guidance.  And the townspeople provided encouragement.

This forward thinking town came to be known as Manchester, Connecticut.  Over the years, businesses of all kinds thrived here.  This was a town built for business, not to mention a nice place to live.

From dairy and tobacco farms, paper mills to textile manufacturers, as the centuries passed, Manchester's industrial base grew more diverse.  Deliberately so.  As industries folded and many Connecticut towns hit hard economic times, Manchester consistently managed to stay healthy.

You see, careful planning, meticulous management and an enthusiastic willingness to embrace the future have always been Manchester hallmarks.  Just look at our historyRead More.
